ABSTRACT

One of the characteristic features of the akhilik as a mystic trend and social phenomenon is that its followers combine almost ascetic way of life with bearing and using weapons. In the paper I will show that this combination could be found, though in a different form, in a community close to the Bektashi and the Baba’i, which existed in the 15th -16th cc. in Rumili (today’s East Bulgaria). Drawing on the vilayetnames of Otman Baba and Demir Baba, as well as on reports about the türbes ofçther evliyas from this community I will point out that the idea of unity of spiritual and armed struggle had continued to exist even after the extinction of the akhi.
