The United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in 2015, which identifies 17 goals to be achieved by 2030. The promotion of the social and solidarity economy is acknowledged as an effective route to sustainable development. With this in mind, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 77/281 (2023) on the Social and Solidarity Economy in recognition of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Akhi ethics, which embrace the principles of cooperation, honest trade, mutual assistance, and social dialogue, resonate with themes in Resolution 77/281. In this paper, the contributor contends that Akhi ethics function for the establishment of a social and solidarity economy, which can inform the policy ecosystem in improving sustainable development. This study contends that the Akhi ethics offer a practical set of principles to improve the Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) that is promoted by United Nations General Assembly Resolution 77/281 (2023) and, as a result, supports the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The analysis establishes a structured relationship matrix that aligns the defining characteristics of SSE in Resolution 77/281 (2023) with fundamental Akhi principles. This matrix encompasses the following: voluntary cooperation and mutual aid; participatory governance; education and skills training; transparency, accountability, and concern for society and the environment; inclusion of vulnerable groups; social dialogue, and labour rights. The findings of the study suggest that the United Nations General Assembly reflected the themes of Akhi ethics in order to promote a social and solidarity economy. This study concludes that Akhi ethics are not merely moral precepts; rather, Akhi tradition provides a functional instrument for the realization of sustainable development.
